Our mandate is championing the rights of women/girls domestic workers

Dhobi Women Network Celebrate the Launch of USSD Code Reporting System

This is a great achievement as many people are using the system to access Justice in case of rights violations on GBV, Labour, and children matters, also linking those who have been violated with organizations and institutions that offer free legal representation, counselling and referrals to the general public.

It is our hope and desire that women, and men will use the platform to seek help and Justice. All you need to do, Dial *483*143#

The organization has launched the USSD Code in two major counties (towns) is looking for more resources to launch it in 45 more counties in Kenya. During the first month of the launch, the code reached more than 500 people with high number of GBV cases and labour being reported.

How does it work?

1. Just need to have a normal phone to access the services.

2. It is in both languages English and kiswahili and easy to understand.

3. Accessible in any part of the country. 4. Integrated numbers have national coverage.

In future, Dhobi Women want to have a call center for follow ups and assistance to those facing challenges of not being assisted. For support, kindly reach out to our email address support@dhobiwomennetwork.or.ke.

Dhobi Women Network has launched an emergency code for gender-based violence survivors to access help. The USSD code *483*143# provides a one-stop platform for reporting incidents, connecting with a hospital for treatment, receiving tele-counselling, and finding a shelter.

In 2021 the organisation joined the World Justice Project global competition, and out of 145 organizations in 115 countries, the organisation emerged the winner under Fundamental Rights and Non discrimination category and was awarded the first ever Ruth Bader Ginsberg Legacy Award for coming up with Covid 19 solutions in advancing the rights of women domestic workers in Kenya.

The organisation developed a Untructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD Code) reporting mechanism with interged National helplines that enable women and communities report cases of rights violations anonimouly without fear of retariation or walking long distances.

This came at the time the high number of GBV cases were reported during lockdowns and many did not know where, who to call for help. The code is in a language that the women can understand, accessible in at part of the country and can use normal phone.
